Just today, our Tampa news affiliate started reporting a new cyber security threat for your phone. Have you received a call on your mobile phone that appears to be coming from the phone itself? Weird, right? It's happening to more and more people in our area every day.
Don't let curiosity get the best of you.
The way the scam works is that the hackers are "spoofing" your number (using a computer program to copy it). Once you answer the call, the hackers use the computer program to insert fraudulent charges onto your phone bill. And, the longer the call goes on, the higher the chance is that they'll be successful.
The best course of action here is to simply not answer calls from unfamiliar (or TOO familiar!) numbers. If the call is urgent, they can always leave a voicemail which can be dealt with once you know who you're actually calling.
