I love making money. Who doesn't? It's fun and it gives me freedom! What stinks is when the money goes out to places it doesn't have to.

Of course, it's 2017 so an unavoidable cost in running my small business is in the purchase of smart phones. Most people waste so much money on buying cell phones for personal and business use that it makes me cringe. Clients all around Tampa Bay are complaining about the cost of buying a smart phone, but very few are taking steps to alleviate that cost for themselves.

Here's the great news, though: over the past few years, I've been able to get back a large percentage (sometimes as high as 50-60%) of my cost on cell phones by following these simple steps.

  1. Buying quality, desired cell phones. By spending a little extra on the mid-range or higher end iPhone, I end up with a device that when I'm done with it, has a high resale value. It has not been my experience that the case is as strong with most Android phones. This is not an iPhone vs. Android post - it is simply reality. The market LOVES iPhones and is willing to pay a premium for a used one.
  2. Invest in a quality case. Protecting your phone will pay dividends when reselling it. A discerning buyer will want as close to a perfect product as possible and since it's a used one, delivering it looking like new will draw higher prices for your used phone. Also, protect that screen with a quality screen protector if your case doesn't do so.
  3. Keep the boxes! For the same reasons as #2. The boxes and original accessories (especially if unused) will help communicate the value of your phone.
  4. List it on eBay. Following 1, 2, & 3 will get you the most value when you list it somewhere that people can bid for it. If your phone is in near perfect shape, brag about it! But be honest, anything you leave out will be reflected in your feedback and will negatively affect your ability to sell in the future. Guard that feedback like a hawk!

That's it. Simple and profitable!
